ΦΩΝΗ ΚΥΠΡΙΩΝ – KIBRISLILARIN SESİ – CYPRIOTS’ VOICE

COMMUNIQUÉ no. 48 – NOVEMBER 2024

Cypriots’ Voice met on the 2 November and examined the current sociopolitical situation in Cyprus concluding as follows:

  1. The current mobility in the Cyprus issue was fuelled by the conclusions drawn by the UN SG envoy Ms Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar who reported and obvious eagerness of the Cypriot Civic Society for solution and gave impetus to a new round called upon by Antonio Guterres bringing Tatar and Christodoulides at a non-formal dinner to encourage resumption of the procedure for a Cyprus settlement. While Greece and Turkey seem, they entered in a serious phase for approaching their geopolitical differences, the Turkish Cypriot leader insists stubbornly in a two-state prerequisite before he consents to start a Cyprus discussion. The key to the resumption of negotiation for settlement of a Bizonal Bicommunal Federation with political equality, is clearly controlled by Erdogan who uses Cyprus and Kurdish issues in a power game to secure his political future. Cypriots must therefore insist on a strong and clear demand for the two leaders to continue talks to reach an agreed settlement, based on the Bizonal Bicommunal Federation with political equality as stated in the UN Grand Montana Framework, and push forward within the context of convergences to run the last mile towards reconciliation and redemption from a long painful conflict.
  2. The slaughter in Ukraine continues and a wild genocide in Gaza is taking place while the world is simply watching, and Cypriots do not seem to understand the war fusion surrounding our area. This barbarian attacks with clean and dirty bombs against the people of the countries in our region does not disturb the inelastic statements of the Cypriot political climate as if we are living in an isolated and secured environment. Cypriots’ Voice is calling upon the political leadership and upon every citizen of the island to evaluate the real danger of the consequences of the war to our country and realise that it is high time to fight for solution of the Cyprus issue through appreciation of the brave gospel of Antonio Guterres for reconciliation and peace.
  3. The attention emerged recently by the US over the republic of Cyprus is mainly connected with the elections in America and the security interests which the United States are deploying in our area. EU is getting involved in the rhetorics of Cyprus locality giving a clear message to Turkey. The present climate of moderation in relations between Greece and Turkey may present a window of opportunity for a Cypriot settlement. Cypriots’ Voice are calling upon the leaders of the political establishment of both communities to cooperate in a common strategy for a carpe diem target towards achieving a Bizonal Bicommunal Federation in line with the aspirations of our people and the interest of all concerned.
  4. Antonio Guterres culminated the last meeting/dinner with the Cypriot leaders giving them a simple clear mandate to return to Cyprus and work together for the opening of more crossings between the north and the south aiming to bring people closer via activist, social and commercial contacts. This mandate seems undermined by behaviours of the administration raising tactical and other obstacles. While the leaders did not proceed with clear political decision, the UN in cooperation with the relevant Technical Committees must pave the way for the opening of targeted crossings which can serve the purpose of rapprochement. Cypriots’ Voice bring to light that in Nicosia there are at least two locations, namely Famagusta Gate (Caglayian) and Paphos Gate (Speedfire) are technically almost ready to serve as new crossing points

Cypriots’ Voice is committed to spread the peace gospel and encourage the participation of the people in the efforts initiated by the United Nations towards a permanent and sustainable peaceful situation in our common homeland.
